Publikacja, wydana z okazji 180 rocznicy odkrycia Neptuna przez Johanna Gottfrieda Galle, prezentuje atlas nieba Astra, opublikowany w 1596 roku przez wrocławskiego kosmografa i iluminatora Zachariasza Bornmanna – dzieło, które ukazało się 250 lat przed odkryciem tej planety. Zawiera reprint oraz tłumaczenie pierwszego wydania atlasu ze zbiorów Saksońskiej Biblioteki Krajowej w Dreźnie, a także uzupełnioną, kolorowaną wersję atlasu ze zbiorów Biblioteki Narodowej w Pradze. Atlas poprzedzony jest wstępem, który omawia zarówno to dzieło w kontekście rozwoju nowożytnej kartografii nieba, jak i wcześniejsze prace Bornmanna poświęcone tematyce astronomicznej: traktat o astrolabium planisferycznym (1586), traktat o astrolabium czworokątnym (Astrolabium tetragonum, 1595) oraz wczesną pracę dotyczącą wielokrotnego zegara słonecznego o siedmiu tarczach (1557). We wstępie przedstawiono także rekonstrukcje instrumentów astronomicznych, wykonane w oparciu o drzeworyty oraz opisy zawarte w dziełach Bornmanna.

Astra. Atlas nieba Zachariasza Bornmanna (Astra: Star Atlas by Zacharias Bornmann)

Published on the occasion of 180th anniversary of Johann Gottfried Galle’s discovery of Neptune, the volume presents Astra, the star atlas issued in 1596 by the Wrocław (then: Breslaw) cosmographer and illuminator Zacharias Bornmann—a work that appeared 250 years before the discovery of that planet. The publication includes a facsimile and Polish translation of the first edition of the atlas, based on the copy held by the Saxon State and University Library in Dresden, together with the revised, hand-coloured version preserved in the National Library of the Czech Republic in Prague. The atlas is preceded by an introduction that examines the work in the context of the development of early modern celestial cartography, as well as Bornmann’s earlier astronomical publications: treatise on the planispheric astrolabe (1586), treatise on the rectilinear astrolabe (Astrolabium tetragonum, 1595), and his early work on a seven-faced block sundial (1557). The introduction also presents reconstructions of the astronomical instruments described and illustrated in Bornmann’s works, based on their original woodcuts and accompanying texts.
